To attempt to explain the role of Homosexuals in American culture in 5 minutes is a task no one is up too. While our pain, suffering and the discrimination against us is primarily oral history in a given area it is further muddied by the fact so many fags have stayed in the closet, far to many have flourished underground to make any outline lacking. This is the reason many if not most of the civil rights activists have denied gays the same respect they eventually were given. We can hide, we can do anything a str8 man does, to include marrying a woman, having children, being elected to state and national offices, all assuming they stay in the closet. To be gay, to be attracted to the same sex can and is often controlled. Far to many str8 organizations are there to reward us if we try to be str8, and our families and friends are there to question our sanity if we come out.
I know of what I speak, I stayed in that closet for years. my life, my professional career, my family relationships all depended on me not being 'sick'. Where is our 'outline' in all things gay?
The children of today are so caught up in the Me Me ME generation they have no understanding of the price we payed. Nor do they understand a life can not be live when all your relations are only with other gays. In the western societies, we comprise perhaps 3-4% of the total population. To lead a fulfilling life, we must both recognize and acknowledge we are a small minority in this system of things.
I would hope that all gay men and women make use of their strengths and minimize our weaknesses. My life can never be about false eyelashes, sequins and leather chaps. I am a man, not a Las Vegas entertainer. I suspect we now have a chance to rewrite our nations view of gays, and with luck, one that will include general acceptance of us as people and not demand they accept our fetishes first.

The death of any human is sad, to those who knew and loved him, more then just sad. That being said the highly inflammatory headline of an LGBT Activist being beaten to death is both pointless and patently untrue. If one read the story, one soon learned that this boy and his friends began this horror by 'verbally attacking' the skin heads about their couture. The argument escalated, as these things often do when you have 2 polarized groups in a face down and this young LGBT activist took a punch, fell back and hit his head on the pavement. His sad and nonsensical death was the result. Hindsight is always to clear and to late. Now one doubts that had we been there we might have advised quiet, and not to open any dialogue between self described Nazi supporters and members of the LGBT community. Perhaps some might even had advised combat training for this boy man. Perhaps an adult was needed to call the police, and tell the police the truth when asked how this all started. Regardless, it is done, it is also over. As members of the LGBT community we must look at each horror like this and try to learn from it. I know we have wit and frequently intelligence on our side, there are times when wit and intelligence is best exercised by discretion.

Matt Trewhella, following his essential beliefs must find us disgusting. This does not mean he is some type of closeted bottom nor that he has some vast collection of porn. I live in an essentially str8 world, and one where the majority of the men I know are married and faithful following their beliefs. I can also say with some certainty that unless the men who are close to me have a rented garage stuffed with porn, none of them have a predilection for porn. I have long ago come to the conclusion that we, as gay men, have a decidedly different approach to life, and we, as gay men, engage in activities the majority of str8 people do find disgusting. This difference is not an acknowledgment of some moral equivalency. They set the moral rules, consequently, we are the ones breaking them. I know living as a gay man in a str8 world is hard, however I never want to belittle them as they have us. Let them recognize their hate. We can rebut that with a sharp wit and a sense of humor only a gay man can appreciate.
